Minister of Lands, Deus Gumba, has advised local councils to make use of the funds allocated to them by the ministry of finance for the 2024–2025 financial year.
The Minister made these remarks during a meeting on the progress of land sector devolution and land registration with District Commissioners and Chief Executive Officers of local councils, which took place in Salima on Friday, 15th May 2025.
Gumba said as one way of implementing the policy on devolution, the ministry has deployed 34 land officers to all district councils in the country to manage land registers and land clerks, ensuring that land has proper certificates.
“We are bringing land services, functions, and authorities in terms of documentation closer to all Malawians so that they can enjoy their freedom to own land,” said Chavula.

In her remarks, District Commissioner for Zomba, Reingard Chavula, emphasized the importance of the meeting, noting that they have been given more direction to resolve the issue of the devolution of land, which has been pending in councils for a while.
“Some of the challenges that we faced are land issues related to property grabbing, such as land being taken from orphaned children or widows, and also encroachment on public land,” said Reingard Chavula.
