Two men identified as Francisco Frank, 28, and Wonderful Tembenuka, 24, have drowned in Lake Malawi, around Senga Bay, in Salima District.
According to Salima police spokesperson, Rabecca Ndiwate, the incident occurred on September 21, 2025, when the two and 14 others organized a trip from Lumbadzi, Dowa to the lake to swim.
“While swimming, Tembenuka went to a deeper area after he was overtaken by the waves due to strong winds. This then prompted Frank to dive into the waters to save him. Unfortunately, he was also overpowered by the waves and they eventually drowned,” Ndiwate said.
She says Frank was found by well-wishers the same and was taken to Senga Bay Baptist Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Tembenuka went missing for three days until the morning of September 23 when his body was found floatingPosstmortem at Salima District Hospital shows the two died due to suffocation, secondary to drowning.
Meanwhile, police in the district are advising people to avoid swimming when there are strong winds on the lake.
Frank hailed from Msangu, Traditional Authority Nsakambewa in Dowa, while Tembenuka was from Chabe village, Traditional Authority Kaduya, Phalombe
