Government through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in collaboration with UNESCO, says they have implemented different measures to make sure that they prepare well in times of climate change to ensure that learning continues during harsh times.
Speaking to Love Radio, Secretary for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Rachel Chimbwete Phiri says they have put in place measures like preparedness, response and recovery, to act immediately in times of disasters.
She further said they would like to extend the information about issues of climate change to the learning curriculum so that students should know what to do do during time of disaster.
“Currently, we have cyclones, things which were not there in the past 10 decades and they are happening now regularly and this is why there is a need to update the curriculum so that students should know what to do during a disaster.” she Said.

Acting Deputy Executive Secretary at Malawi National Commission for UNESCO, David Mulera, said it is very crucial that Malawians adopt Malawi Smart Education Systems since currently the weather has changed and Students, Teachers and the community should adapt and prepare themselves for upcoming events in as far as climate change is concerned, which is in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal of education quality.
“These measure shoulde written and include in books so that these disasters should not disturb the education sector.” Mulera said.
The ministry of Basic and secondary education is working hand in hand with UNESCO, UNICEF, DODMA and others in implementing the project to schools.
