A 60-year-old man named Meleke Jeke has died after being attacked by a wild elephant in Namizimu Forest Reserve, near Kwilasya Village under Traditional Authority Namabvi in Mangochi District.
According to Mangochi Public Relations Officer Amina Tepani Daud, Jeke was in his maize garden near the forest on the morning of April 7, 2025, checking his crops and protecting them from baboons. While in the field, a wild elephant suddenly emerged and attacked him, resulting in his instant death.
The incident was witnessed by neighboring farmers who share garden boundaries with the deceased.
Daud further said that the matter was immediately reported to the Lungwena Police Unit, where police officers, accompanied by a medical practitioner, visited the scene and conducted a postmortem examination, which confirmed that death was due to multiple fractures and internal bleeding sustained during the elephant attack.
Meanwhile, police have notified the Department of National Parks and Wildlife for appropriate action.
Jeke hailed from Kwilasya Village, Traditional Authority Namabvi, in Mangochi District.
