A 58-year-old man, Yembekezani Kasema, from Saidi village in the area of Traditional Authority Ndindi in Salima District, is celebrating a new chapter in his life after regaining his sight through a successful cataract surgery.

The operation was carried out by the Islamic Health Association of Malawi (IHAM) in partnership with Nkhoma Mission Hospital and Salima District Hospital, with support from the Barakah Charity.

Kasema, who is among several others who have undergone the procedure and regained their sight, said he had been struggling to see for some time — a challenge that affected his ability to work and manage his daily life. After the surgery, he expressed deep gratitude to the organizations for restoring his vision.

“I had lost hope, but now I can see again. I thank the doctors and everyone who made this possible,” said Kasema.

According to the Executive Director of IHAM, Hajj Daitoni, the initiative aims to reach 100 people with cataract surgery, provide reading glasses to 300 others, and assist many more with general eye problems.

Daitoni said the response has been overwhelming, showing that many people in the district are struggling with eye conditions.

“In Salima, there are still many cataract cases. We have been coming here several times, but many patients are still out there. The progress is good, as of today, we have operated on about 67 of the 100 patients targeted. We started on Sunday and we will conclude on Friday,” he said.

The initiative is part of IHAM’s ongoing efforts to provide free eye care services to rural communities across the country, especially for those who cannot afford treatment.
