The University of Malawi (UNIMA) Alumni Association has announced new projects aimed at improving access to education and student welfare.
The initiatives were unveiled during the association’s first Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Salima, which brought together alumni from as early as 1991 to the latest graduates of 2024, alongside students from Salima Secondary School.
UNIMA Vice Chancellor, Professor Samson Sajidu, described the renewed alumni unity as a milestone for the institution, noting that the AGM has rekindled a vital relationship between the university and its former students.
He confirmed that the construction of student hostels is a priority project, designed to ease accommodation challenges and foster a better learning environment.

Representing the Alumni Association Board of Trustees, Professor Dorothy Nampota, who also chairs the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB), emphasized the alumni’s commitment to simplifying education for all students.
She highlighted the flagship “Adopt the Needy Students” programme, which will provide holistic support to vulnerable students beyond tuition, complementing the work of the Higher Education Students Loans Board.
Nampota stressed that the programme will ensure deserving students receive the resources they need to successfully pursue their studies at UNIMA.
The AGM was attended by Alumni Association President and education expert Limbani Nsapato, as well as graduates from UNIMA’s constituent colleges including Bunda College, Kamuzu College of Medicine, and Chancellor College.
Salima Secondary School students also participated, gaining exposure to higher education opportunities.
The association expressed optimism that its establishment and planned projects will significantly enhance the academic experience and overall well-being of UNIMA students.
